Short answer: some changes show up in ChatGPT within days, but in most sectors getting recommended takes weeks. On our own website, ChatGPT went from not listing us to listing us third in two days, for a question with very few competitors (our case study). If many businesses compete for the same question, as restaurants, fiduciaries or law firms in Luxembourg do, expect it to take longer, and be wary of anyone who promises a date.

How long does GEO take for ChatGPT and other AI assistants?

GEO (getting your business named in AI answers) is a chain of steps, and each step runs on someone else's timetable. These are the timings the providers publish themselves:

StepWhat the provider saysSource
ChatGPT search notices a robots.txt changeAbout 24 hours for search resultsOpenAI
Google crawls a page you asked it to recrawlA few days to a few weeks, with no guarantee it gets includedGoogle
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode can show the pageNo extra steps: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google SearchGoogle
Bing and other IndexNow engines (such as Yandex, Naver and Seznam.cz) get a page you submittedNo timeframe; "it may take time" and indexing is not guaranteedBing, IndexNow
Google Business Profile edits go liveUsually up to 10 minutes to review, sometimes up to 30 daysGoogle

None of these is the moment ChatGPT starts recommending you. They are the moments it can see the new information. Whether it then names you depends on what else it finds about your competitors, and that part has no published timetable.

Our own result: two days, and why that was a best case

In October 2026 we ran GEO on our own website first, and checked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google on day 0 and on day 2 (full case study with screenshots):

Where we checkedDay 0Day 2
ChatGPTNot listed#3
GeminiNot listed#1
GoogleNot shown#1 result

On day 2, ChatGPT placed us third in its top 10 shortlist, and Gemini named us first, as a GEO-focused agency working in English, French and German.

The honest caveat: the question we tested was about GEO agencies in Luxembourg. Very few businesses compete for that answer, and very few web pages answer it. That makes it a best case. A question like "best fiduciary in Luxembourg" or "good Italian restaurant in Kirchberg" has dozens of businesses with years of reviews, listings and articles behind them. In sectors like that, expect weeks, not days, and sometimes longer.

Why does it take weeks in most sectors?

  • More competitors. The assistant compares you with every business that answers the same question. If ten firms have detailed pages, reviews and directory listings, one new page rarely changes the answer overnight.
  • Other websites move slowly. AI assistants often look at what other sites say about you: directories, review sites, press. Getting listed or corrected there depends on each site's own review process.
  • Search engines crawl on their own schedule. As the table shows, Google may take days to weeks to recrawl a page, and Bing gives no timeframe.
  • Answers vary. Ask the same question twice and you may get two different lists. One good answer is not a trend; the same result over several checks is.

What can I do to make it faster?

You can't control the assistants' timetable, but you can remove the delays that are on your side. Do these in order:

  1. Check where you stand today. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your customers ask and save the answers with the date. Guide: Check what ChatGPT says about your business.
  2. Make sure AI can read your website. If your robots.txt or firewall blocks OpenAI's search crawler, ChatGPT search can't show your pages. A fix here is noticed in about a day. Guide: Let ChatGPT read your website.
  3. Get your pages into Google and Bing. Ask Google to recrawl changed pages and submit them to Bing. Guide: Get found by Google and Bing.
  4. Correct wrong facts at the source. Wrong hours, prices or services usually come from an old listing or page. Guide: Correct the wrong facts ChatGPT tells about you.
  5. Get listed where assistants look in Luxembourg. Directory and profile updates each have their own review time. Guide: Get listed where ChatGPT looks in Luxembourg.

Steps 1 to 3 are usually days of work. Steps 4 and 5 depend on other websites and are where most of the weeks go.

How do I know if it is working?

Re-test the same questions, in the same languages, from Luxembourg, and compare them with the answers you saved on day 0. For example, Fiduciaire Veldrin (a fictional firm) might ask ChatGPT "Which fiduciary in Luxembourg helps small companies with VAT?" in English and French every week. If the firm appears in more answers over several weeks, it is working. If one answer names it and the next doesn't, keep checking before drawing conclusions.

Can anyone guarantee how long it will take?

No. OpenAI, Google and Microsoft decide what their assistants say, and they don't publish a timetable for when a business starts being recommended. Google says even a requested crawl may never lead to inclusion. What an agency can promise is the work: a dated baseline, the fixes it will make, and a re-test of the same questions afterwards.

FAQ

How long does GEO take to show results in ChatGPT?

It depends on how many businesses compete for the same question. On our own website, for a question with few competitors, ChatGPT went from not listing us to listing us third in two days. In most sectors, expect weeks, and nobody can promise a date.

How quickly does ChatGPT notice a robots.txt change?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust for ChatGPT search results (OpenAI).

How long does Google take to crawl a page after I ask?

Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and that asking for a crawl does not guarantee the page will appear at all (Google Search Central).

Can an agency guarantee ChatGPT will recommend me by a certain date?

No. AI assistants decide their answers themselves and change them over time. An honest agency shows you what the answers say today, what it will change, and re-tests the same questions afterwards.

Do I need to do something special for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet (Google Search Central).
